I am a Biomedical Student. Everytime people ask me, “what course are you taking?” definitely I would say “Biomedic.” Then for sure they would ask, “What is the difference of it with Medic?”

What do you think? Do you ever heard about biomedic? or biomedical sciences? Hmm…that is a challenging question even for me. Let us define it together. Here are some brief notes that I managed to find out;

Biological science applied to medicine: the employing of the principles of biology, biochemistry, physiology, and other basic sciences to solve problems in clinical medicine.”

source: Dictionary-MSN Encarta

“Biomedicine is a new system of holistic health care. It successfully integrates orthodox with complementary medicine, eastern with western medical wisdom and ancient healing principles with contemporary psychosomatic therapies. By establishing the relationship between body and mind, biomedicine brings together curative and preventative medicine. It also puts healing under the umbrella of existing scientific methodology. Biomedicine is characterised by its medical effectiveness, vitality and pioneering spirit, the corner stones of the art of medicine.”

What do you think? Does this definition satisfy you? What? Not yet? Fine…Let us see more;

“Biomedicine, also known as theoretical medicine, is a term that comprises the knowledge and research which is more or less in common to the fields of human medicine, veterinary medicine, odontology and fundamental biosciences such as biochemistry, chemistry, biology, histology, genetics, embriology, anatomy, physiology, pathology, biomedical engineering, zoology, botanics and microbiology.

Biomedicine is usually not concerned with the practice of medicine as much as it is with the theory, knowledge and research of it; its results render possible new drugs and a deeper, molecular understanding of the mechanisms underlying disease, and thus lays the foundation of all medical application, diagnosis and treatment.”

Hmmm…until then, I leave the discussion for you to think first. We continue later..

    Rasanya akak bukan orang yang layak utk komen di sini…walaupun mmg bergelar a degree holder in Biomedical Science…tapi mungkin banyak lg yg blm akak explore…Allahu a’laam..i’ll try to share what i used to experience before…coz i believe, “Sharing is caring”.

    Akak setuju dgn definition yg zul kemukakan ttg biomedic itself…in a simple word…biomed is research-based….dan sbnrnya kita boleh pergi jauh serta bnyk cabangnya setelah selesai kuliah (provided that we are the given the chance and of course..with good prospects in our country)…tapi sayangnya, akak blm nampak ianya berlaku di Malaysia (mungkin akak ‘bias’ since akak merasai perbezaannya di Australia dulu…but i reckon it’s fair enough)…allahu a’laam..i’ll leave it open…

    Qouting dari seorang doktor sblm akak memilih utk menerima biomed ni..katanya…”Doktor ibarat kereta…dan kita yg belajar biomed ni ibarat enjin kereta itu…so, kalau takde enjin, mana mungkin kereta boleh berfungsi….in brief…nampak tak kepentingan biomed ni / jasanya pd doktor? Hehehe…sekadar pemberi semangat…inshaAllah”

    I think, that’s enough for now….smg berjaya dlm bidang yg diceburi…Amin :D

  2. As says:

    benar2, pape bidang yang medical related, is a supporting team for doctors to complete their tasks. Hidup ini buka kita seorang, heh, samalah, leh aply untuk kes ni

    wallahu’alam :)

    Biomedicine is more on research and we can explore even more deeper on certain discipline such as pathology, virology, bacteriology, pharmacology and other logous. hehe

    It is a human based science that concern more on to human compared to biotechnology which is more on to plant and animals (I think). Thus, the biomedicine students have a close relation with medicine and we can even further on medicine.

    We could do lab works like lab analysis. For example when the doctor take a sample from patient, they send it to the lab for analysis, this is where biomedicine staff will take their role.

    Hopefully the things will become more clear on the future.

    To Adib, hopefully you could get some idea from here ok.
